We hope everyone is rested up and ready to work! Mrs. Brooks moved across the county to a new house during the break and needs another break to recover.

Important Dates:

March 2nd- Read Across America Day, the school will have a variety of activities throughout the day. Little Eagle chorus will also begin at 2:30 after school.

March 3rd- School Talent Show 6:30 pm. There might be a teacher surprise!

March 17th- Last day to turn in Eagle Eyes for the Eagle Eye party.

Reading: We finished Because of Winn-Dixie and watched the movie before the break. As we watched the movie the children were commenting about the differences between the movie and the book and were excited to see how the characters were portrayed. We will be continuing with our book club books, our vocabulary will be coming from the books and  will be different for each group. Since we had the break we didn’t give the vocabulary words on Friday, they will receive them on Monday. The words are on spelling city. We are scheduled for a “book tasting” on Thursday, Read Across America Day, in the learning commons. The children will rotate around tables and “taste” books of different genres to broaden their horizons.

We will be focusing on standards RL9 and RI9, comparing and contrasting two texts. Some of the students will work in small group with the teacher for remediation on standard RL3, character studies. There are questions for each book on Edmodo, students may either type their answers on Edmodo or may handwrite their answers and turn in.

Most of the children have a Eagle Eye due on Monday, they were verbally told several times before the break if they had one due, I honestly can’t remember if we wrote a list on the board so they also had a written reminder.

Writing: Whew, it came down to the wire but we finished our animal papers! This week the children will select one of the historical figures we study in Social Studies to do further research. Hopefully several will be inspired to dress up as their character for a “wax museum” during the Garden Gala. We are scheduled to use the computer lab on Friday for our research and will also check out books from the learning commons and use classroom books.

Grammar: Our mentor book this week is Junkyard Wonders by Patricia Polacco. She is one of our favorite children’s authors. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a good video reading of the book to post to Edmodo.

Small group Reading and Writing: This week in reading we are going to focus on words with glued sounds ung, unk, ong, ink. Our words this week are lung, sung, junk, flunk, shrunk, song, long, pink, blink, glass. During writing we are going to work on writing using the RACE strategy where we restate the question before we start writing. I am looking forward to a great week. Love, Ms. Dorsett

February 13-17

STEM day was quite the success! Each student participated in a quiz to see what type of engineer position would be interesting for them. We had a variety within the class and shared what the different jobs covered. Thank you to everyone who sent supplies for the day!

Important Dates:

February 14th- Progress reports due. Students who have a one in an academic area will receive a progress report. Classroom Valentines! Students will decorate a bag during Eagle Time and will exchange Valentine’s at the end of the day. The list of names was sent home last Monday, if you need another one please let Mrs. Brooks or Mrs. Mohammed know before school lets out on Monday.

February 13-17– Hoops for Hearts fundraiser is due.

Reading- We will finish Because of Winn-Dixie this week. On Friday the students will watch the movie so we can compare/contrast the book with the movie. The last discussion questions are on Edmodo. We have our last vocabulary from Because of Winn Dixie this week. The words are on spelling city. When we return from the break the vocabulary words will come from their book club books. We will continue with reading standards RI9 and RL9 with comparing/contrasting two different reading passages. Writing- We will finish our informative writing on animals native to Georgia this week. Final copies are due on Thursday. When we return from the  break students will begin researching a historical figure that we cover in social studies. These papers will be used during our Garden Gala in May.

Grammar- We will be reading Olive My Love this week to go along with Valentines Day. They continue to impress with how quickly they are grasping the concepts. Their speed when we ask for certain parts of speech within the sentence has increased, they are also remembering the different parts faster. They are beginning to go back on their own in their writing looking to replace $2 words with $5 or $10 words.

Math: We finished comparing fractions with like denominators. We also reviewed the concepts of comparing fractions in relation to one whole. This week we will begin measurement! Students will practice measuring different objects to the nearest inch, half-inch, and quarter-inch. At home, make sure students are practicing their math facts! Our goal is for all of our students to know all of their math facts by the end of 3rd grade!

Social Studies/Science: We concluded our study of Eleanor Roosevelt. The students loved learning about Eleanor and her life. They used the words: brave, kind, and thoughtful to describe her. We will conclude our study of the levels of government. Students are learning about the federal government, state government, and city governments. Later in the week, we will begin learning about the different regions of Georgia.

Small Group Reading and Writing- This week in small group we will be working on more glued sounds for spelling, (ost, old, ild, ind). These are our spelling words for this week lost, host, most, bold, cold, child, mild, bind, find, blind.  We are practicing finding the main idea and writing about it as we are reading and writing. This week in writing we are going to write about valentines day and who we love.  We are continuing to practice the RACE strategy to restate the question when we are writing.

Important Dates:

February 6th-10th– BOOK FAIR in the learning commons. Students who bring money in will be able to go the book fair during Eagle Time. There is no library checkout during the book fair.

February 7th– School Store is open between 7:15-7:45. Students MUST arrive before 7:35 in order to have time to make their selections before the store closes.

February 8th- The entire third grade will watch a play about water conservation.

Reading Everyone received their new reading book club book this week. So far the children are all enjoying the selections. Everyone has read the first two chapters of their books and have answered discussion questions. The discussion questions are posted on Edmodo along with the Because of Winn-Dixie questions. We implemented a new policy for the discussion questions. Since typing is difficult for some of the children and extremely time consuming, they may also submit handwritten answers to the questions. They were reminded that the questions for Because of Winn-Dixie are posted on the Promethean before we read a chapter and we discuss the questions after reading the chapter. Many of them take notes as we read and discuss and have been turning in these notes saving a step. We are on target to finish Because of Winn-Dixie in time that we can watch the movie of the book on February 17th, the last day before the February break.

We are remediating the character standard in small group. We will finish up remediating and will have a snapshot assessment on Monday since we have STEM day on Friday.

This week has more vocabulary words than we had last week, the students were given the words on Friday, all the words are taken from the chapters we will be reading in Because of Winn-Dixie this week. They will use their choice board for the homework, our assessment will be on Thursday due to STEM day, they will have three homework choices due this week.

We do have Eagle Eyes due on Monday. Thank you parents, our percent of students turning in Eagle Eyes has greatly increased!

I have received notification from Scholastic that one book order will arrive Monday afternoon and the other will arrive on Tuesday afternoon. Thank you to everyone who ordered, we have a lot of students who ordered Because of Winn-Dixie and the individual book club books. Our next order will be placed on February 28th. I’ll look through the flyers and see if there are any $1 books available and let you know the titles.

Writing- We are furiously working on the draft copy of our Georgia animals. We hope to complete the final copy and picture before the February break so they can select the historical figure they wish to research. We will be using our historical figure papers for the wax museum at the Garden Gala in May. Student volunteers will dress up as their historical figure and provide information to the visitors. There will be more information to come on the Gala.

Grammar- We are very much enjoying our mentor sentences and our books. This week we will be reading The Paperboy by Dave Pilkey. Each week they get faster at answering the grammar questions, finding the parts of speech and replacing words with synonyms. I don’t even have to remind them to use a thesaurus if they aren’t sure about a synonym.

Small Group Reading and Writing: This week in reading we are going to focus on glued sounds of am, an, ang, ank, all. Our spelling words will follow these glued sounds. We will have 3 spelling activites due for homework on Thursday with an assessment due to STEM day Friday. In writing we are working hard on restating the question to begin our writing. Math: This past week we explored how 2 fractions are considered equivalent if they are the same size in relation to the whole and if they occupy the same space on the number-line. We practiced drawing models of wholes as well as number-lines.

This week we will look at comparing fractions with like denominators using models and number-lines. Our focus is not only to have students correctly compare fractions but to be able to support their answer with a model. Below is one of the videos we will be viewing in class.

Please continue working with your child on learning their multiplication facts. This is one of the best ways you can prepare your child for fourth grade. Here is a fun rap for the 6s. These seem to be one of the tougher ones for the kids.

Social Studies: We will finish our study of Eleanor Roosevelt.   Below is one of the quotes we came across on our reading. The students were amazed at how Eleanor Roosevelt overcame her personal obstacles of a lonely childhood, becoming orphaned at an early age, and extreme shyness to become one of our most celebrated First Ladies.

Reading- We are well into Because of Winn-Dixie, the children amaze me with the details they remember from the story and how they are able to go beyond the words on the pages to describe the characters. They will be grouped into new reading clubs on Monday! There are three selections and children will be placed in a group based upon Lexile. Our books are Charlotte’s Web, The Chocolate Touch, and Freckle Juice. Charlotte’s Web is available from Scholastic for $1 and The Chocolate Touch is available for $3, Freckle Juice isn’t available at this time. If you would like to order a book for your child to keep at home you can email Mrs. Brooks at marcy.brooks@cobbk12.org to see which book your child is assigned. Amazon does have Freckle Juice but it is $5.99 for the book and $4.99 for the Kindle edition. We will have Edomodo questions on these books in addition to Winn-Dixie. We will finish Winn-Dixie before the February break, I hope to be able to show the movie before we go on the break. I have noticed that some of the students are not answering the questions in Edmodo or they are only answering some of the questions. If answering through Edmodo is too difficult they can submit their answers on paper. I will inform them of this option on Monday. We post the questions on the board before we read the chapter in class so they can copy the questions from the board.

Eagle Eyes are due on Monday, we had a long list of students that had one due, hopefully everyone listened and looked at the board to see if their name was posted.

Vocabulary words for chapters 10-12 were handed out on Friday. As usual, four squares on the choice menu are due on Friday and the assessment will be on Friday. They have been doing well with their assessments, hopefully they are utilizing their new words in their speaking and writing.

A Scholastic book order will be placed the morning of January 31st (Tuesday). If you wish to place an order you can go online and order or send in payment along with the paper order form that was sent home in Thursday folders. Our class code for Scholastic is NBX43.

Writing- Last week the children worked on a bold beginning for their animal paper. This week we will begin composing the body of the paper using the information they have gathered. They will work independently, in small groups and with the teacher to organize their information. We hope to finish the first draft this week so we can make corrections next week and publish. We would like for them to draw a picture of their animal so we can post them in the hallway with their writing. Their next assignment will be to select one of the people we study in Social Studies to do a research paper on them. We will use these papers for our wax museum during the Garden Gala in May.

Grammar- Our mentor text this week is The Rough Faced Girl. It is an Algonquin Indian version of the Cinderella story. The children are doing a wonderful job with the mentor sentences. Their skills using higher level synonyms increases each week. In reading, they will do a compare/contrast with The Rough Face Girl and a traditional Cinderella story. Math: We continued our study of fractions by looking at wholes as fractions. Students made the connection that in a whole, the numerator and denominator are equal. Students then looked at models of more than 1 whole and interpreted them as fractions, noting that a fraction greater than a whole would have a numerator that is greater than the denominator. I am amazed at the connections they have been making and the high level of conceptual understanding they are demonstrating. We also began our exploration of number lines by plotting fractions on a number line. This really helped the students to see the relationship of fractions to a whole. They were able to see that a proper fraction is less than 1 because it has not yet reached 1 on the number line.

Social Studies: We continued learning about FDR and one of the greatest obstacles he had to overcome: paralysis. The students participated in a group activity in which they had to complete a task that required them to get information from their classmates, without leaving their chair. The students found it challenging and were able to make the connection to FDR and how difficult it would have been for him to run the country with a disability.

Small group reading and writing: This week in reading we are going to focus on sight words and writing silly sentences. Our spelling words this week are ant, brand, and, van, plan, bang, clang, sang, thank, drank. This week all of our words have the glued sound (an). Please talk with your child about their spelling words and help them with learn to read and spell these words. In writing this week we are continuing to work on our 5 minute quick write activity, the kids are doing so great writing for the time and coming up with neat stories. They love to share what they have written with the class. I love hearing them. We are going to read Tar Beach this week and use this mentor text to learn about life in the 1930’s. We really hate to start off with a “complaint”, but….30 of our 43 students had study hall on Friday, all for not completing homework. If there is a family emergency that interfers please let us know, we will work with you, otherwise we do expect them to turn in an Eagle Eye and complete math, vocabulary/spelling homework. Eagle Eyes are due on Monday, students are informed, at the latest, Friday morning if they have an Eagle Eye due. They are also reminded daily to work on Eagle Eyes during Eagle Time and to take forms home with them. They have a math choice board for their multiplication facts, they are also reminded to complete it, as well as it is written on the classroom agenda and is projected on the board for most of the day. Since the vocabulary words are new we have been giving them to students on Friday for extra study time. They use their choice menu to complete activities for homework, there are four activites due this week. If students go to System 44 they receive a spelling packet that contains activities, the completed packet is due on Friday. Reading- We are getting into our Because of Winn-Dixie! The children did a great job of answering questions on Edmodo last week. We only have two chapters this week and each chapter has two questions. We also have a Snapshot on Edmodo for the character standards we have been covering the past few weeks. Eagle Eyes are due on Monday. If your child forgot to bring home a form there is a link under pages where you can go and print a form. Vocabulary homework and spelling packets are due on Friday. We will have a vocabulary assessment and spelling assessment on Friday.

Writing- The children have spent the last couple of weeks gathering the information on their native Georgia animal. This week they will begin organizing it into paragraphs. We will work independently and in small groups to ensure they understand sequence and order. We have been doing small group lessons about putting information in correct order so it makes sense to our reader.

Grammar- I know everyone can hardly wait to find out the Mentor Text for the week. It will be……Tar Beach! The text goes along with our Social Studies time frame of the 1930’s. We will work on our mentor sentence in class together and students will have a tiny bit of homework each night. They are doing really well with their seventh grade work!

Math: This past week, we continued reinforcing fraction concepts such as the fact that all fractions can be looked at in terms of unit fractions. Unit fractions are the smallest fraction that can be made with any given denominator. In short, any fraction with 1 as the numerator can be a unit fraction. with any given denominator. For example, 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4. We also looked at fractions in relation to a whole. Using fraction tiles, students were able to determine that:

–a fraction with the same numerator and denominator is equal to 1

— a fraction wherein the numerator is less than the denominator is less than 1 whole

— a fraction wherein the numerator is less than the denominator is less than 1 whole

Social Studies: We will continue our study of historical figures with Franklin Delano Roosevelt. We will begin with a look at life in the 1930s to set the stage for the students of the America that FDR inherited. We will look at details of his life, the obstacles he had to overcome, and the the contributions he made to society. Please ask your students about the historical figures we have been studying. You may be surprised at how much they know!

Small Group Reading and Writing: In small group reading we have spelling words this week our words are focused on the glued sound (am)  all the words have the glued sound am in the word. Please help your child study for the spelling test on Friday and help them complete their spelling homework each night.  Our spelling words are champ,stamp, cramp, slam, lamp, cram, wham, swam, Pam, ham. In writing, we are going to work on the mentor text Enemy Pie. We are continuing to research and we will begin writing about our Georgia animals soon.

January 17-20

January 17th- Bring library books, check out between 7:15-7:45, students must arrive by 7:30 in order to have time to get the media center and select a book before 7:45.

January 24th– School store

Reading- We started reading Because of Winn-Dixie, we have read through chapter 4 and will read chapters 5-7 this week. We are really enjoying the book, unfortunately we don’t have copies the students can take home. Amazon has Kindle editions for $5.38 and paperback copies for $5.70 if you would like a copy for home. The Cobb County Library has copies available in book and electronic format. The book is excellent for our focus standard of characters, it has a strong main character and strong supporting characters. The plot of the book affects the characters as well as their actions affect the plot. Questions from the chapters will be coming through Edmodo. Last week I put the questions on the board and we read them aloud before reading the chapter. We discussed that the children should be listening for the answers and make notes as I read the chapter aloud. After reading we then discussed the chapters and the correct answers. The children were instructed to place their notes in their expandable folders and type their answers into Edmodo at home (if possible). It takes them a while to type and Edmodo doesn’t allow them to save and return later so typing at home seems to be the best option. If they don’t finish typing their answer we have discovered they can finish typing in the comments section or do a revision of their answers.

The students were given a copy of the vocabulary words on Friday so they would have extra time to study them. 5-7 of Because of Winn-Dixie. The words came chapters Unfortunately several students left their’s lying around the room. As they were passed out each child was told specifically to put the paper straight in their expandable folder, at least eight copies were found Friday afternoon. We will have a vocabulary assessment on Friday, it will be in matching format. They will have three homeworks due on Friday, they have a choice menu and the words are on Spelling City.

Most of the children have an Eagle Eye due on Tuesday. We have new forms available in the classroom, the learning commons and online. We have gone over the forms in class and discussed the changes.

Writing- Our standard for the nine weeks is informational writing. Last week students used a graphic organizer to begin collecting information regarding their Georgia animal of choice. We discussed that for their first informative writing project we would use a boxes and bullets format as it is simple to use and organize. When they write their paper on a historical figure we will discuss other ways to organize our information and select the format they are most comfortable using. This week they will begin organizing their information into paragraphs as they form a draft paper. Students will meet with the teacher for extra support in gathering and organizing their data.

Grammar- The mentor sentence was a success last week! The children are super excited about our “seventh” grade work. This week our mentor text is Enemy Pie. We will again lift one sentence from the book and will manipulate it each day to help improve our writing skills. On Friday we do have an assessment with the sentence to check our skills. Our focus standard will be adjectives, the children will practice in class adding adjectives to our sentences in writing. They will have a small amount of homework with their sentence each night, they will use the back of the page from last week’s work. These are skills they are just learning, we don’t expect them to be perfect but they should try the homework. We will discuss in class each day what is expected for that night’s homework and will go over the homework the next morning.

Small Group Reading and Writing- This week in our small group we will have spelling words, please help your child study for our test on Friday. We are going to be learning about vowel teams and practicing using them in class. We are going to continue our work with mentor sentences and we will use the mentor text Verdi to support our learning this week.  In writing, we are going to begin looking at informational writing, we will choose a native Georgia animal and we will then research our animal. We are continuing to do a 5 minute quick write each  day so that we have practice with  “just writing”. The kids are doing a great job and I always enjoy when  we share our writing with each other. Math: Our focus this week is to understand that fractions are more than the shaded or un-shaded part of a shape. We want students to understand fractions as a part/ whole relationship, even when there is no shading involved. We will continue our study of fractions by composing and decomposing fractions using fraction tiles and fraction circles so that students can see for themselves that 3/4 is equal to three 1/4 pieces. We will also explore wholes by looking at the part to whole relationship in 1 whole regardless of the number of pieces in the whole. We will then begin looking at unit fractions and the three ways they can be represented: as a set, as a whole, and on the number-line.

Social Studies: We continued reading and discussing the life of Mary McLeod Bethune. Students were fascinated to hear about how Bethune’s determination helped her to overcome many obstacles to help educate African American children.

January 13th- Eagle Eye and House parties. Congratulations to all our students who went above and beyond to be able to attend the Eagle Eye party. It isn’t easy to get 16 points in a 9 weeks but we have 8 students attending the party!!

REMINDER- STUDENTS ARE LOW ON PENCILS, IF POSSIBLE PLEASE RESTOCK THEM. WE DON’T KEEP A PENCIL “STASH” IN THE CLASS, STUDENTS KEEP THEIR OWN SUPPLIES.

Reading: We have new Eagle Eyes forms for the semester! We will go over the forms in class, an Eagle Eye is not due on Monday.  We will be starting a reading club, all the students will be reading Because of Winn-Dixie in class, teacher will be reading it aloud. They will answer comprehension questions on the chapters through Edmodo. Instead of spelling words we will have vocabulary words, students will still use a choice menu for homework but will have a vocabulary test on Friday instead of a spelling test. Students who attend System 44 will receive alternate spelling words and homework assignments. Our primary standards focus will be character, we will study how the character’s actions affect the plot, how the plot affects the character, identifying with a character, how supporting characters help the story line, etc.

Writing: Our writing focus is primarily informational this 9 weeks. We will study how to research and compile a written text on a selected topic. We will do the first research on an animal native to Georgia and their second one will be on a person we study in Social Studies. We will begin by discussing different methods for organizing information on our topic.

Grammar: We are excited to introduce a new area of study for grammar…Mentor Sentences! We select a sentence from a mentor text and the children spend the week working on the sentence, they will identify the type of sentence, parts of speech, rewrite the sentence and compose a sentence of their own in the same style as the mentor sentence. Students who remain with Mrs. Brooks during reading will also work with the mentor text during independent reading. There is a little homework that goes along with the program, we ask that the children try the homework, we will go over it in detail in class to explain what is needed. Our first text is Verdi, a tale about a snake.

We will go over the forms in class, an Eagle Eye is not due on Monday. We are excited to introduce a new area of study for grammar…Mentor Sentences! This week we will read The Snowy Day and our mentor sentence will go along with this text. We will identify the parts of speech of the sentence, rewrite the sentence and compose a sentence of our own in the same style as the mentor sentence. We are going to review words in Reading that have digraphs and have bonus letters. Please help your child by asking them what are digraphs and what are bonus letters? In writing we will write about our New Year resolutions and our goals for the new year.  Please make sure your child is prepared for class everyday by signing their agenda, making sure that homework is done, and seeing that they have two pencils for school everyday. Math: In Math, we will begin our unit on fractions, starting with fractions as part of a set and moving to fractions as a part of a whole. Our goal is to have students understand that a fraction is a relationship between a part and its whole, whether the whole is a group or one whole object separated into parts. Once students are able to name fractions of both types and draw corresponding drawings for given fractions, we will begin looking closely at unit fractions (fractions with a numerator of 1).

Social Studies: We will continue our study of historical figures with Mary McLeod Bethune, focusing on she used her education, community organizational skills, and resources to help African Americans have greater access to education and job training. We will also discuss the obstacles she faced.

Important Dates:

December 13th- School store will be open from 7:15-7:50. Students need to arrive by 7:30 in order to have time to go through the store.

December 16th- The PTA pizza party for Mrs. Brooks’ homeroom will be during regular lunch. The students will eat in the room and watch a video.

December 21st- Class parties will be from 8:00-9:40 am. The students will then have a sing along in the gym and we will watch holiday themed movies in the classrooms.

Reminders: Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather. If the temperature permits, we do try to take the kids outside.

Math: In Math this week, we looked at different ways to organize data in the form of a graph, specifically a bar graph and a pictograph. We collected data on class favorites through a survey and then used them to create graphs. We also talked about how a bar or pictorial representation on a graph can represent more than one unit.

Social Studies: We learned about Frederick Douglass this past week. We discussed how he was born a slave but eventually escaped to freedom through the Underground Railroad and became an abolitionist, using his words as a weapon to fight against slavery! The students made the connection that he and Susan B. Anthony worked together to further the women’s suffrage movement. The kids thought it was amazing that the two activists supported each other. Ask your children to share what they know about this determined and diligent man. You will be amazed at how much they know!

Reading: Students will finish up their latest biography and write a short synopsis on Edmodo. We will begin our Sharing Through the Seasons! The children will decorate a bag to hold all their souvenirs from the different stories. I think the adults are as excited as the children! We will NOT have spelling this week due to our sharing time. Eagle Eyes are due on Monday, December 21st is the last day to accept them for this 9 weeks. We have several children very close to making the Learning Commons party for going above and beyond, keep up the good work! Last nine weeks we had more children attend the party than any other third grade team, let’s have even more this nine weeks!!

Writing: We will finish our current narrative and begin presenting Sharing Through the Seasons!

Small Group Reading and Writing: This week in our small group reading and writing class we are going to have spelling words. These are mostly review words with several new glued sounds. Please help your child study and learn to spell these words and to recognize these patterns. The spelling  words are bold, wind, bolt, host, child, crib, chill, gruff, flung, blank. It is almost our winter break but we do have eight more days, lets really make them count. We are going to work hard and learn  a lot over this next week and a half. Love, Ms. Dorsett

Hard to believe there is only 2 1/2 weeks until the winter break!  We do have some upcoming events listed below

December 6th– Big Shanty night at the new Menchie’s from 6-8 pm. The Big Shanty drummers will be performing.

December 16th- Mrs. Brooks class will have the PTA pizza party during lunch to celebrate bringing in 510 canned goods!

December 21st- Class parties at 8am, school singalong ata 9:40 and movie day. Whew! Students may wear pajamas to school for the party. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to bring something to the party. The link to the signup genius for Mrs. Brooks is below.

We have a new policy for parents coming to eat lunch with their child. We will have two “special” areas set up for parents to eat with their child and one special friend (if they wish to invite a friend).

Reading: The students enjoyed selecting a biography and reading it last week, we will select another one this week. We will continue to work on locating information within a nonfiction text and using nonfiction features to help locate information. We even have a reading passage about reindeer! Students also have an Edmodo snapshot on standards RI7 and RI8 to complete. An Eagle Eye is due on Monday, most students have already turned in one. We have another student who has earned 16 points and will be attending the Learning Commons celebration, our total is now 6 students attending! We have several students that are near the mark, please keep reading and completing Eagle Eye forms!

Spelling: We have new spelling words this week, students will use the same choice menu for their homework. As usual, four different homework choices are due on Friday when we have the assessment.

Writing: Hopefully we are nearing the end of our writing piece. Students are finishing their drafts, editing their own writing and editing a partner’s writing before they begin their final copy.

Math: We have finished our unit on area and perimeter and will begin our unit on graphing. We will use student data from surveys to graph class favorites. We will continue with the Choice Board as Math Homework for the week. Please work with your kids to learn their math facts. Instant recall of math facts is critical for success in Math.

Science: This past week we talked about weathering and erosion, We created chants to remember that weathweathering-erosionering is the process of breaking down and erosion is the  process of taking or moving away. We created models of these processes using sand and soil and noted how water, wind, and ice can cause both weathering and erosion.

Social Studies: This week we will talk about Frederick Douglass and his contributions to our nations struggle for equality.

Small Group Reading and Writing: This week in our small group reading and writing we will continue our work with FUNDATIONS a phonics based program. We will have spelling words that will follow some of the rules we have already learned. Those rules are digraphs, bonus letters, and glued sounds. Be sure to ask your child to tell you about these rules. In writing we are going to do a lot of writing about the Holiday’s including topics like snowmen, reindeer, elves, Santa and more. Important Dates:

November 29th- Learning Commons checkout during Eagle Time. Students who arrive before 7:30 will be able to go to the Learning Commons and get new library books.

December 2nd- Giving Tree items due. If you would like to purchase a gift for a needy child or their siblings here at Big Shanty we have a tree in the lobby containing tags with a needed item. If you aren’t able to come in to the school to get a tag let Mrs. Brooks or Mrs. Mohammed know you would like to contribute and your child will be sent to the lobby to select a tag. Please return the tag along with the gift.

December 10th- We will place our last Scholastic order before the winter break. Some flyers came home before Thanksgiving break and there are some more coming home Thursday. If you wish to place an order you can return the paper order form along with a check or cash for the amount (no tax or shipping is charged) or you may go online to Scholastic and place an order online with a debit or credit card. Our class code is NBX43. The books are shipped to school and will be distributed to students when they arrive.

Reading:

We are continuing the focus on non-fiction text this grading period. The students will begin focusing on biographies and non-fiction text that is written more as a narrative. They will work in small group with Mrs. Brooks on locating details in non-fiction writing and will independently complete a snapshot on Edmodo for standards RL5 and RI5. They will work independently on a variety of assignments using non-fiction text features. They will receive a new spelling list on Monday, we are continuing with our “words all third grade students need to know” so the list will not be leveled. Students will also receive a new homework choice menu. We will use this menu until the winter break. Four selections from the board will be due on Friday, the same day as the assessment. Students are encouraged to take the practice quiz on Spelling City. If your students does Spelling City for one of their homeworks please make a note in their agenda that they visited Spelling City.

Writing:

Students will continue working on their second story. They have editing checklists in order to check their own or their partners work. Students will confer with teacher after they have utilized their checklist and their partner has checked their story.

Grammar:

We will continue our study of idioms utilizing a Promethean flipchart and reading aloud books specific for idioms. Students will take an idiom comprehension assessment on Friday. On Monday students will receive information regarding Sharing Through the Seasons. Children will select a holiday book to read aloud to the class. Their book may be on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Kwanzaa or any other religious event celebrated during November, December or January. They will need to practice reading their book at home so they are fluid and accurate when they read aloud to the class. They need to be able to finish the book in 15 minutes and should bring a small item related to the book. They can make or purchase something related to the book but it should be inexpensive. They will also receive a packet to complete on their book, they will need to provide information and develop five questions from their book. They will be able to write their report or they may type it into a word document or Powerpoint. The information coming home is detailed regarding the requirements. We will begin presenting our books on December 12th, to make it fair Mrs. Brooks will “draw sticks” in each class to assign students a date that their book is due. This project covers several standards for reading, writing and speaking, after visiting Mrs. Peacock’s class and seeing their Halloween wax museum they wanted to do a similar project for the winter holidays. They are very excited to do the project, if they don’t have a book at home they wish to read they may go to the Learning Commons at school to get a holiday book. Below are links to all the forms.

Small Group Reading and Writing 

Welcome back to school, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I so enjoyed some time with my kids and all the rest. This week in Reading and Writing we will be reveiwing and doing some writing about Thanksgiving time. We will have spelling words this week.
